The reality these days is that people (most of them… not just the young ones) crave success. It is believed that this state of mind is a product of advertising really because everything you see and hear tells you that what you have isn’t great and you aren’t living the best life that you could be living.
This is the reality of life and there is very little chance of this going away any time soon.
After spending hours with successful people and experiencing their early levels of success personally, Punit Dhawan, a renowned motivational speaker has listed out some rules that are important to him.
“Success is a marathon, not a sprint.”
Don’t Live a Limited Life
Punit Dhawan believes that life, as he calls it, is made up by the people. This simply means that anyone can influence it and change it. You don’t have to accept things as they are because you can definitely do something about it. For instance, you can bring more productivity to your life and change your lives for the better. Never limit yourself.
Have Passion
Punit Dhawan agrees that people need to have a lot of passions if they wish to be successful in the things they’re doing. Working at something is a bit hard and unless that person loves what he/she is doing, giving up would be the most logical thing to do. But if you look at the history, the people who are successful in life are the ones who loved doing what they did, did not give up when the going got tough and excelled in it.
Listen more than you speak
This might be the hardest thing for you to do, especially when you’re young because it is easy to think that you have things figured out but in reality, you barely know anything.
You should be comfortable with the fact that you cannot always be the smartest person in the room because it’ll allow you to hear what other people have to say. Instead of taking things negatively, you should be positive because there is something to learn all the time.
“Focus on one thing and do it so well that it takes you very far.”
Punit Dhawan
Success shouldn’t always be about money
Most people confuse money with success when in reality they aren’t tightly connected. No matter what you’re doing in life, there will always be someone who is making more money than you.
You could make ₹1,00,000 a year (which is a relatively good figure) but you might consider yourself a failure if you’re comparing yourself to someone who makes $2,000,000 per year and that ₹20,00,000 earner might feel down on themselves if they compare themselves to someone who earns ₹1,00,00,000.
Making money is important but you shouldn’t tie your ideological image of success to money otherwise you will live a life of constant failure.
Surround yourself with winners
If there is one rule that you must live by according to Punit, it is this one.
You will notice the positive change in life once you decide to surround yourself with people who are wiser, smarter, and more experienced than you.
You must know someone who is surrounded by people who are constantly pulling them down. Are you imagining them right now and feeling a bit bad for them? Well, don’t feel that way because they decide whom they surround themselves with.
Choose the right crowd and surround yourself with mentors who will force you to be better than what you were yesterday.
Be Proud of What You’re Doing
Punit states that no matter what you do in life, do it proudly. No job is ordinary if you do it with passion. As history suggests, if you do something with passion and if you’re proud of it, you are more likely to succeed. If you’re proud of what you do, you are more likely to be patient and persevere for longer… giving you more chances of succeeding and not giving up on the potential success.
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish
You should never be satisfied with just meeting goals. If you have met your goal, set bigger goals. If you have achieved your targets, set bigger targets. Punit believes that you are your biggest competition. You have to stay hungry and foolish especially when you’re young such that you can find what works for you.
“In the middle of every difficulty lies an opportunity.”
Punit Dhawan
You should develop new ideas and be open to experimenting in different fields because it will allow you to understand what works for you. Be hungry for knowledge, adventure and be full of passion and patience and you will have a better chance of succeeding.
